I was talking to a collector recently about my first experience with Ray Caesar. When I first saw Ray’s work, I fell immediately in love and asked the gallery about buying an “original.” The gallerist explained the works were digital. I said, “Fine. I’d like the digital original” 🙂 The dealer then explained that the limited edition of 20 were the originals and, like a LaChapelle or Liebowitz art photo, once they were sold, that would be the end of their availability and the last time they could be purchased from the artist. Since then I’ve had amazing talks with Ray, learned more about his process and his mastery of this new art tool and I watched proudly as the Bristol City Museum opened their first permanent collection of digital art with the acquisition of Ray’s “Love Letters.”
Now, with the imminent opening of his first solo exhibition at Corey Helford this Saturday, 10/22, I am very proud to be able to bring to Los Angeles – for the first time – a full, substantial body of the works of the complicated and unique genius that is Ray Caesar.
