I have been to several of Luke Chueh’s shows over the past few years , I have to admit it took me a while to fully appreciate his artwork.
When I looked at his paintings I only saw a darkness veiled in humour.
His images used to make me feel a bit sad and uncomfortable because it felt like he poured his rawest emotions and inner turmoil into these paintings. They seemed so disillusive .
Those times I was looking and was not ready to see what was plainly there.
I realized that maybe that is the whole point. As an artist being able to express yourself and work through the clouds inside your head is a type of salvation.
So now when I look at Luke Chueh’s work I see that salvation. Through expression and in hope for some relief.
This Saturday June 9th at Gallery 1988 is the release of The Art of Luke Chueh- Bearing the Unbearable.
It is a lovely retrospective of his work and interviews,quotes and various information you should know about this artist. Coffee table size 9.5″x12.5″ and was published by Titan Books in conjunction with Gallery 1988 who has very strong ties to this artist.

Join us as we celebrate the release of Luke Chueh’s first official book:“Bearing the Unbearable”. A retrospective featuring paintings from 2003-2009. To commemorate the release, Gallery 1988 be showcasing a selection of original sketches from which several paintings from the book were based on.
