I met the adorable and bubbly Jenny Rae for the first time at a popup store we were both participating in. Over that weekend i got to know her and her delicious little cakes balls. I love meeting ambitious creative entrepreneurs and she is all three.
She is based in Los Angeles and is available to sweeten up any and all occasions with her delectable treats.
Here’s a little Q & A with Jenny.
What inspired you to start making cakeballs?
My friend, Emily, is the one who got me into cake balls. Funny enough, the one time she made them, I didn’t even try them. I was low on cash during Christmas in 2009, and I decided to be a part of a Christmas boutique. I thought I would try making cake balls to sell, and they went over real big. I totally admit though that they didn’t look amazing, haha. It took me a long time to actually perfect the art of the cake ball.
Is this your full time job?, and if it is at what point did your business take off?
I made cake balls an actual business back in April of 2010 when friends, family, and co-workers told me that this could be something huge. I was currently working at Radio Disney in Burbank, and I didn’t have to work an event after June 2010 due to the high demand for Lil Rae Cakes. Since then, Lil Rae Cakes has been my full time job.
What are your most popular flavors?
Red Velvet has always been a popular flavor. It always confuses me, because i’m not sure if it’s just because the cake is red… or because it’s a trend… or if people genuinely like the flavor of it. Maple Bacon is definitely one of the other popular flavors. It helped me win the Cupcake Showdown in 2010 at LA ArtWalk. Who wouldn’t want breakfast as a dessert?!
Do you ever plan on offering a vegan cake ball option?
People occasionally ask me about offering vegan Lil Rae Cakes, but unfortunately the chocolate coating I use contains dairy. I do however supply sugar-free chocolate and gluten-free chocolate upon request.
Any new flavors or events coming up you would like to talk about?
Fall is coming up! That means my Lil Monster Cakes will be back in action come October 1st. Orders can be placed starting mid-September. I will be at the next Johnny Cupcakes event, which will be taking place in October. Check www.johnnycupcakes.com for updates!
