Large Blue Butterfly back from extinction
Some of my favorite news involves conservation success, bringing a species back from extinction always feels hopeful and a baby step in the right direction in protecting our natural world.
The large blue butterfly once extinct in Britain has made a comeback, thanks to the hard work of conservationists.
The large blue butterfly is one of the rarest species in Britain and was declared extinct in 1979.
They have been reintroduced into the wild in small numbers and the most recent reintroduction was over 1000 resulting in 750 butterflies emerging!
Evidence has been found that they are now laying their eggs in the wild which is an excellent sign they will continue to survive.
It’s the first time in 150 years that the large blue butterfly which is the rarest of all nine British blue butterflies has been recorded at Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons.
