Many of these I saw in the theater and were so weird or amazing I still remember them all vividly. I’ll make this an ongoing segment because I love creative movies and could list 100.
Lair of the White Worm – Director Ken Russell -1988
I saw this movie when I was 15 and at that point, thought it was the most visually entertaining movie I had ever seen.
I literally could not review this film any better than Peter Walker did for the Guardian so chick HERE
for perfect synopsis.
Lisztomania – Director Ken Russell – 1975
Based on the prolific 19th century Hungarian composer, pianist who was hailed as being the first classical pop star. At his performances apparently there were screaming women and it was standing room only. Which is amazing considering it was the 1800’s.
In true Ken Russell form this movie is visually bazaar and full of phallic symbolism.
Amazing Gigantic Cock Scene
Ladies & Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains – Lou Adler – 1982
This movie is amazing in so many ways. Featuring a cast of little know future stars like Diana Lane & Laura Dern to Punk Rock Icons Paul Simonon (The Clash), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Paul Cook (Sex Pistols), Black Randy (BLACK RANDY), Fee Waybill (The Tubes) etc etc.
About a teenage girl and her sister who’s mother has died and along with her sister is being sort of cared for by her crappy aunt. They are interviewed about the economy of their local town. Corrine (Diane Lane) becomes belligerent which endears her to the public. They do a follow up interview where she then plugs her band “The Stains”. They don’t know how to play their instruments and are pretty terrible but she convinces a promoter to add her to his current tour featuring a washed up metal band and punk band.
Suddenly with her antisocial tirades between terrible music playing the press coins her as the new voice of feminism. Their popularity explodes and subsequently crashes.
The Black Randy scenes are one of my favorite parts of this movie, he does I slept in an arcade TWICE!
Also I firmly believe the White Stripes got their name from this movie. Listen close or you might miss it. HINT Lawnboy is talking to Corrine in front of the tour bus. ( if I remember correctly, its been a while since Ive seen this movie)
